Lake Merritt Stormwater Pump Station FLOOD RESILIENCY IMPROVEMENTS

Zone No. 12 Project

Project Overview

The Lake Merritt Stormwater Pump Station located in Flood Control Zone No. 12, was  constructed in 1968 to serve approximately 5,060-acre drainage area that includes residential, industrial, commercial, school, and open space areas.  While the pump station operates year-round, it plays a critical role in managing stormwater runoff during the rainy season. Positioned below street level at the East 8th Street/7th Street Bridge, the station is an integral part of the Lake Merritt outlet channel.

The objective of the project is to implement flood resiliency improvements for the existing pump station by addressing vulnerabilities related to future sea-level rise.  The improvements will includes sealing known exterior wall penetrations associated with electrical conduits, ventilation exhaust piping, generator engine exhaust piping, as well as retrofitting personnel access doors with floodproof doors. These upgrades will strengthen the pump station’s ability to withstand rising water levels and ensure its continued efficiency in flood management.
